What is Matrescence, a term created by an anthropologist in 1973, Dana Raphael, meaning the “Birth of a Mother”. In 2008, Dr. Aurelie Athan decided to dive deep into the fundamental aspects of being a mother. She decided to break it down into the biological, psychological, social, political, and spiritual traits of mothering. Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother.
Gabby Russo is an expatriate mom in our mom’s network. She is creating a fabulous book club for going through the process of motherhood with the use of group conversation and books. She states, “This space is for those looking to share meaningful and intentional conversations about matrescence: the transformation to motherhood, using some of the most important books I know on the topic as a guide.”
She is starting a 5-week pilot project with the Matrescence Book Club to explore the interest and impact a group like this can have on our expatriate moms and the raising of their children. Though expectant and new mothers will probably get the most value from it, anybody is welcome to join.

This will be a pilot of 5 weeks starting after Easter, so sign-up now to get your place in the group. The first book is Newborn Mothers by Julia Jones (who is my amazing postpartum doula teacher). It is a short but incredibly powerful read. Newborn babies are welcome to join with the mother, in fact, it is encouraged!
