English Language Schools and Homeschool for 10 year old

I’m a sole parent considering spending Sept-Dec. 2014 in Florence (at EUI) with my daughter, who will be 10. Are there any English language school options apart from the International School? She is studying French at school but she won’t be proficient enough in French to go to the French school. Any advice/suggestions would be welcome. Thanks alot,
Audrey

  1. Hi Rhonda,
I haven’t followed up on home school options because I will be in Florence on my own and so can’t home school anyway. Sorry not to be more help. I did contact the Int’l School several months ago about the possibility of a 4 month stint, and they seemed open to it. That may turn out to be the only feasible option for me. Good luck – I’d be happy to know how it goes. Warm regards,
    Audrey

  2. Any luck Audrey? I will be coming at that time too with a 10 and 14 yr old….Are there any home school program groups where kids get together?

    • Dear Rhonda, We were in contact over a year ago. I’m now in Florence with my 10 year old daughter and I actually found a home-school option that worked out for me — Adina is being tutored by a young ex-pat US teacher who relocated here a couple of years ago. She is great, and I’d be happy to give you more info about her if you like. The only downside to the arrangement is that my daughter hasn’t been able to meet other kids her age. Are you here in Florence? If so, perhaps we could connect. Warm regards, Audrey

  4. Ciao Audrey!
Try the school called Kindergarten. You can find them on line.
If I can help you any way let me know! I have worked at ISF and I will start working at Kindergarten in September.
    My husband works at EUI.

    all the best
    Hajni

    • Hi Hajni,
As I read it, Kindgergarten operates in Italian, with daily classes in English. Is that correct?

  5. Audrey, I run English courses for Italian children and literacy/culture courses for bilingual children. I have helped people in your situation in the past. Drop me a line at ingleseforyou@yahoo.com and we can chat about what your needs are and how to best meet them.

  6. Oddly, enough, we are almost in the same boat as I will be spending a few months in Florence beginning in September 2013 with my 8-year-old daughter, and we didn’t find anything for such a short period of time. We didn’t meet the residency requirements for an Italian school, and none of the private schools that I contacted were willing to accept her for less than a year. I re-arranged my work schedule to allow for more time to spend with her since she won’t be at school, and she’s been given a packet of stuff from her current school so that I can “road school” while we are away.

    • Thanks so much for your reply. Will you be doing this as a sole parent? If so, what kind of child care arrangements will you have for her while you are working? Cheers,
      Audrey
